Nitrous Oxide Gas
To help make your visit as comfortable as possible, we offer nitrous oxide gas, affectionately referred to as âlaughing gasâ. The gas is administered through a small mask placed over the nose. The patient then breathes through his or her nose and out through his or her mouth. The patient will begin to feel relaxed and comfortable between thirty seconds and four minutes, and the doctor can then, if necessary, administer the anesthetic, or injection.
The nitrous oxide is then turned off, and the patient breathes pure oxygen for five minutes, or until all effects of the sedation have been reversed. When finished the procedure, the patient can generally leave the office without an escort. Nitrous oxide does cause nausea in some patients. The nitrous oxide will not be used on patients with blocked nasal passages or those who are claustrophobic because it will not be effective.
